Around fifty cars have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.

Cars, walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a official communication.

Police report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish fluid.

The fluid had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they reported.

Police then found numerous other marked automobiles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.

Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.

Officials report initial examinations suggest the liquid was most likely human bodily fluid.

"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; investigators are presently not informed of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they stated.

Municipal representatives said they were trying "to unravel the case" and have asked to the residents for details.

An important official stated the attack rendered him speechless and needed to be solved quickly.

"This incident affects the very heart of Hanau and reopens the wounds of the far-right attack in 2020," he posted on a platform, referring to the murder of nine victims by a gunman focusing on people of migrant background in five years prior.
